Big & Bad Abstracts

Thursday AM Class

  • In This Class, You'll Learn:

Join Kristen as she shares her own process for going "big and bad" plus other tricks of the trade.

Students will learn about artists who also work larger-than-life and the different stages of a painting as you are guided through the process. The result: a super large, mixed media painting!

    Topics Covered:

    - using bold brushstrokes, connecting body to canvas

    - discovering the right tools

    - creating compositions that suit large format

    - how perception of color and value can change or even exaggerate at a larger scale

    - time and money saving tips

    - how to store and ship large art

    - studying artists who like to paint large

Students will walk away confident and comfortable with creating "monumental" works of art. At the end of each five week session, students will have completed one large scale painting.

NOTE: this is designed for artists who have already taken a few Level 2 courses and/or are proficient with using acrylics.

  • Supply List for Students to Bring:

This is a studio class and students will be using their supplies on the first week.

    • Canvas or wood panels that have a 48" side or larger (i.e. 36x48 and up...instructor will be demoing on sizes like 40x60 and 30x70)

Option 1: you can get a roll of loose, unstretched canvas that can be clipped to a large foam board, 1/2" thick, for support.

Option 2: you can buy 2-3 canvases or wood panels of the same size to make a multi-panel piece (diptych example: two 40x40s make a 40x80).

Option 3: you can buy a single, large canvas or wood panel if you have the means to transport it (hello, mini vans).
