Color Riot: Color Mixing Basics

Saturday Workshop with Cappie Geis

  • In This Workshop, You'll Learn:

In this workshop, instructor Cappie Geis will help guide you into the world of color and break things down into simple concepts. This workshop uses acrylics but artists can also apply these same techniques to oil, gouache, or watercolor!

Learn how to overcome common problems while learning to work with color. There are big differences between colors, pigments, and other properties of paint like opacity and translucency and you'll learn to work with these elements.

Because we can all admit: in the past, we've all tried mixing a red and blue together only to end up with a muddy purple or we tried mixing a blue and yellow, only to end up with a flat green, right? Let’s learn to make some really exciting colors!

    Join us as we explore:

    • primary colors and how to best use them
    • the color wheel
    • values, color temperature, and saturation
    • mixing greens (including teal and turquoise)
    • mixing purples (including deep reds and maroons)
    • mixing oranges (including peach and earthy oranges)

Avoid months of frustration and tinkering with color mixing. Cappie is going to share her experiences with you so you can get exactly what you want because understanding color mixing will make a WORLD of difference in your art making.

Students will walk away with color studies on canvases and newfound skills and knowledge to apply to painting projects at home.

About the Instructor

Cappie Geis

I am inspired by life. I paint with acrylics and mixed media. My art may begin with just “putting paint on the canvas” or an inspiration from a trip or a walk around my neighborhood or a class that has inspired me to try something new.

Animals, figures and landscapes are some of my favorite subjects.  I also love the abstract techniques and will always start a new piece with an interesting background or just continue with a completely abstract painting. I may add some mixed media and will sometimes include vintage sheet music or tissue or napkins I have saved from an event or bought because of the graphics.

Teaching art to all age groups brings joy to all and I love introducing art to those who may have never picked up a paintbrush or those who want to try something new or just need someone to look at what they are working on and for me to ask ... “what if."
