Learn to Capture the Human Face
Improve your rendering and observation skills with fundamental techniques and concepts while using graphite and charcoal.

In This Class, You'll Learn:
We'll cover everything from basic structure and proportions to features and expressions. Whether you're a beginner or looking to hone your skills, this class will provide you with the tools and guidance to enhance your portrait drawing abilities.
In this class, you will learn:- How to break down the human head by using simple proportions and structure
- Develop better observational skills in order capture the likeness of the subject
- Various techniques such as shading, highlighting, and texturing to add depth and realism.
- How to accurately draw individual facial features and their relationship to one another.
Students will walk away with a finished drawing and a better understanding of how to render faces. -
Supply List for Students to Bring:
This is a studio class and students will be using their supplies on the first week.
- Drawing paper pad (no smaller than 11x14 inches)
- Erasers (kneaded & white vinyl)
- Blenders and stumps
- Graphite pencils (hard & soft)
- Charcoal pencils (hard & soft)
- Ruler

About the Instructor
Bret Berndes
Bret Berndes is a representational artist born and raised in San Diego, where he feels a deep connection to the landscape and culture. Bret began creating art as a child and later pursued a formal education in fine art and animation. This training, combined with years of dedicated practice, has equipped him with a versatile skill set and a unique approach. With over seven years of experience teaching art, Bret has guided and inspired numerous students while continuing to develop his own artistic voice.
Bret's love for nature is evident in his plein air work, capturing the essence of the outdoors with a keen eye for detail and a deep admiration for the natural world. He has also developed a strong appreciation for depicting the human form, through extensive study and guidance from exceptional instructors. Throughout his career, he has explored various mediums and techniques which reflects his commitment to artistic exploration and his love for the craft.
